When you truly want to be a good Muay Thai fighter, then you have to learn how to sharpen your defensive skills. With this, you will be a more effective fighter and increase your chances in winning or even knocking down your opponent and finish the match early.

Here are some tips on how you

can improve your defensive skills in Muay Thai.

The first is by exercising reflex drills. This training regimen will focus on quickening your reflexes on any given action. You have to remember that the key to a solid defense is to develop your reflex to attacks. By responding fast to attacks, you will thwart your opponent’s attacks and even perhaps allow you to ready for counterattacks.

One excellent way to drill your reflex is to have your sparring mate throw mid level roundhouse kicks at you and over you. Your primary objective is to block each kick using the right technique. By doing this again and again, you would gain muscle memory and your body will naturally respond to this type of kick.

The next tip is to build up your pattern recognition. Much like analyzing your poker buddies for “tells”, you have to see what gives off your opponents

when they will be attacking. For instance, some Muay Thai fighters move their shoulders prior to throwing a punch. By being observant, you will recognize your opponent’s next move, which would help you prepare for the attack.

Using a mirror is the third tip. To perfect your defensive style, you need to see how your body moves when executing your techniques. Using a mirror or a video camera, you will see what moves you need to work at or improve.

Another tip is to repeat an action several times. Always remember that everything must be automatic in Muay Thai. There's no time to think what your next move ought to be. By repeating your defensive technique again and again, your body would react automatically to attacks.

Lastly, you must take care of your eyes. Always keep in mind that the ability to dodge an attack is linked on your ability to see. In Muay Thai, one blink or flinch is plenty enough to allow your opponent throw a knockout blow. Train your eyes to remain open and at ease even while your opponent attacks you.

Keep in mind that the strongest punch is the one that you do not see. So, try to train your eyes to stay open throughout all the action.
